Will she become king?
In the mountain kingdom of Fontanasia, Avalon Hall is born a girl, but secretly raised as a boy so the king will have a rightful heir to the throne. At fourteen, Avalon is a strong prince and wants only to become king when it is her time, but she is worried that as she gets older, it will be more difficult to conceal her gender. Avalon travels to the distant land of Cormicks, and in unveiling a plot to kill her father, she must survive slow devouring sand eels, gigantic, crushing anthracites, and a terrifying hoard of everred spiders. In a race with time to return to Fontanasia and save her family, Avalon struggles between the boy that she is pretending to be and her growing feelings for Taggerty, one of the king’s guard, whose mere presence opens a door in her mind to the possibility of a life she had never before considered.
Prince S The Avalon Hall Trilogy Book 1 eBook Anita Renaghan
This is a great young adult novel in the fantasy genre. It's a quick read and very entertaining. I would recommend it for young adults to read on their own or for teachers/other adult mentors to read aloud to a group of children. I'm excited to find out what happens in the next installment of this series. I think this book is also very timely with the surge in female hero characters of late.Product details

Prince S The Avalon Hall Trilogy Book 1 eBook Anita Renaghan Reviews
The writer introduces the reader to fairy-tale world, full of beauty, mystery and dark secrets. The plot is interesting, though slow-paced sometimes. There are also too many details about thoughts, emotions, and scenes. Yet, as the story unfolds, the reader gets more and more absorbed in the adventures of the hero -who is actually a heroine. I consider chapter 15 the most interesting of all, since all mysteries are solved there with an unexpected twist and the heroine manages to find out who her real enemy is. All in all, this is a well-written fantasy novel, which fantasy lovers would like to read.
An great adventure that includes not only searching for amulets and power, but also searching for who you are and being true to that. Something adults can benefit from as well as the younger reader!
I very enjoyable clean book. I read it in one day.
It held my interest throughout. It's not flowery and overly descriptive. I love that in a book.
Action, intrigue... Very good!
I received this free through prolific works and this is my honest review.
I plan to get the next book!
Anita Renaghan has given the world a fairy tale that will last through the ages. And what a unique tale it is. A baby girl, raised as a boy, that grows up to be King in the land of Fontanasia.
Queen Samantha died giving birth to ‘the next royal child’ and heir to the Kingdom of Fontanasia; Avalon. Queen Samantha’s only wish was to please the King with the birth of a boy child. The Queen’s faithful servant, Myra George, so loved the Queen that she passed the baby off as the boy King Birch so wanted, and so needed to inherit the throne to prevent Counselor Glenn from overthrowing the kingdom. Myra arranged for the Queen to have her dying wish by wrapping the baby in a blue blanket before handing it to the dying Queen. “I knew that I would have a son. Birch will be so pleased to have a son and heir to the throne.”
And pleased King Birch was, though he would have loved Avalon the same had she been presented to the world as the girl she was. He was proud and prepared Avalon to succeed him as King of Fontanasia since the day she was born. Avalon took her curious position in life to heart, rising to the occasion with courage, and compassion for her family and kingdom. Yet, she wonders how long she can compress her growing feelings for one of her faithful guards, Taggerty.
The story ends with Avalon overcoming all sorts of adversities and being crowned King. All this by age fourteen. Is this happily ever after? Will she take Taggerty into her inner sanctum, share her closely held secret as they so admire and lean on each other to guard their kingdom? Where is the sequel?
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and was pleasantly surprised. The synopsis had me intrigued and I must admit that the cover gave me pause but I'm glad I entered the giveaway, and even more so that I won.
S. Avalon Hall was born a girl but in a time of desperation, she is presented as a boy so that there will be an heir to the throne. She is raised as a boy, spending her life training in both combat and politics, so that she may take over once she is of age. This causes a lot of conflict for Avalon, especially has she gets older. She knows she is a girl but feels both obligated and honored to be able to take over for her father should the need arise. Time is quickly running out and it is becoming increasingly difficult to hide her true identity as she starts filling out as young women do.
Her true nature is tested when she must learn some secrets of her kingdom and take a journey that will forever change her life. Will her secret, in fact, remain a secret or will it be used against her? Will she rise to power as the King of Fontanasia one day or decide to reveal herself in an attempt to have a normal life and fall in love?
Such a wonderful read! The synopsis says that it is the first installment in the Avalon Hall Series and so I hope to be able to read a second installment. I'd love to see where Avalon's life takes her. The only disappointment I really had was the cover. I believe an updated cover would catch the eye of more readers and then they too could enjoy Avalon's story.
A unique take on, often sexist, princess stories. This is definitely a teens/young adults book with some heavy themes and dark, complex story line. I look forward to the next one!
